The Curriculum.
We aim to provide as wide and varied a curriculum as possible, whilst addressing the requirements of the National Curriculum. Much of the work is planned through a topic approach where meaningful and relevant activities are provided for children to develop their knowledge and understanding.
We use the children's own experiences as much as possible and provide opportunities to broaden these experiences throughrelevant school trips, visits and visitors to school whenever we are able.
Language is developed through all the curriculum subjects as we seek to enable children to communicate effectively and with confidence in both the spoken and written word.
Reading has a very high priority in school as we are committed to providing the best possible provision for our children in terms of structure and variety of reading materials. Reading books may be sent home on a regular basis whenever the class teacher feels that this is appropriate and guidance offered as to the ways in which parents might most effectively support the learning process.
The Maths curriculum is designed to develop a sound base of mathematical knowledge whilst enabling a child to work confidently in problem solving and investigative situations where mathematical knowledge is required.
We encourage children to explore and investigate scientific ideas and acquire the skill of gathering relevant information to analyse and record findings in a variety of ways.
The teaching of History and Geography is often incorporated into the general topic and draws from children's own experience and that of their natural environment so that the learning process is meaningful and relevant.
Children are encouraged to develop skills in using the body and appropriate equipment to express themselves confidently and creatively in the fields of art and craft, music, drama, dance, P.E. and games.
We have a number of enthusiastic and committed teams who play inter-school matches throughout the year and who have a great many successes. Children in Year 4 have swimming lessons once a week for the whole year.
All children are given the opportunity to sing and play musical instruments. We have music teachers in school and peripatetic teachers who visit us each week. The children are given the chance to learn to play recorders and a variety of other musical instruments. We also have a school choir.
