parent information
Q. What kind of information do I have access to?
A. In order to comply with the requirements of the 1988 Education Act, parents have the right of access to the following documents.
1. the L.E.A.'s statement of curriculum aims
2. the Governing Body's statement of curriculum aims
3. copies of D.E.S. orders and circulars
4.OFSTED reports referring to the school
5. schemes of work used by the school
6. details of the L.E.A.'s complaints procedure
7. the Governing Body's annual report to parents
8. the L.E.A.'s agreed syllabus for religious education
Parents wishing to see any of the above documents should contact the Headteacher at the school.
Q. What is the schools charging policy ?
A. The policy of the school is to make charges for the following:
a) all optional activities which take place either wholly or more than 50% out of school hours (travelling time included)
b) the cost of board and lodgings for all activities requiring an overnight stay.
The cost of travel, entrance fees, etc. for activities during school hours, or for activities which are deemed to fulfil syllabus requirements relating to the National Curriculum, religious education or prescribed public examinations, may not be charged.
However, the school is entitled to ask for voluntary contributions. These must be genuinely voluntary and no discrimination may be made against those pupils whose parents have not contributed.
Parents will be given a costing per child as a guideline to any contribution they might wish to make. Should voluntary contributions fail to cover the cost, the Headteacher will decide whether funds can be made available from other sources or whether the event must be cancelled.
Charges at the present time will not be made for children being taught in a group by an L.E.A. peripatetic teacher, e.g. children now receiving violin lessons.
The school reserves the right to charge, in cash or kind, for incidentals to the provision of education, e.g. ingredients or materials, where parents have expressed a wish to retain the finished product.
By the terms of the 1998 Act, all charges must be remitted to parents who are in receipt of family credit or income support. Westbrook Lane Primary School will continue its long-established practice of remitting charges to families where there are financial difficulties whether or not parents are in receipt of family credit orincome support. Parents are requested to speak to the Headteacher in strictest confidence, when the need arises.
Q. How can we, as parents help ?
A. We place great importance on the links between home and school. Regular newsletters are sent home to parents about events and activities taking place in school. We also have three parents evenings a year where we meet with you to discuss your child's progress. We have a number of parents who help us in school in the classrooms with various tasks such as baking, computing, listening to readers, helping to organise parties etc. We are always happy to have an extra pair of hands.
We also have a lively and flourishing team of parent helpers. who organise many different events throughout the year and raise valuable extra funds for the school. These events are always well attended and social occasions such as discos and swimming parties provide much fun and entertainment for children and parents of the school.
For the last few years we have been running a Christmas Shopping Train 'The Westbrook Flyer' to London or Edinburgh. Proceeds from this have enabled us to provide exciting new equipment such and to proceed with building alterations to create new areas in school.
All parents of children at Westbrook automatically become members of the P.T.F.A. We are always keen to involve as many people as possible in our school activities and value your support.
